Formats, Sketching and Ink

So while I was at San Diego Comic con this year I had the opportunity to see a lot of brilliant artists at work and a lot of great tools and techniques they use to get their desired results. One of my favorite things about sci-fi, fantasy, and comic art is how varied and robust each artist’s skillset and experience is. There are many variations of mixed media along with traditional techniques that help them define their artistic style.
I will provide a list of some of the booths I visited and was particularly inspired by:

Plenty of artists were on hand drawing right there on the showroom floor and I noticed a lot of them (the comic book/Manga artists) drawing with blue pencils on a very specific size of paper which was then inked with a brush like marker. I probably stood there for 40 minutes watching a guy first sketch out some blocks and then ink in an Optimus Prime that looked terrific. He had only used a blue pencil and then a few of these brush markers. I had to learn more! Thankfully there were plenty of vendors and a lot of the artists were using variations of the same pencils and brush pens. I asked questions, took mental notes and did research of my own.
Official Paper
Comic artists generally use a Bristol board that is 11”x17”, the paper size officially known as: ledger, Tabloid or ANSI B. These pages can be Plate or Vellum (Smooth or textured) and usually run about $12 for 24 sheets. You can even find some now that are pre-ruled for comic books if that is what you are looking to do. It seems Strathmore is the leading brand of paper out there but there are plenty of others if you go looking. I found a sketchbook and paid way too much for it at the Con but I really wanted the paper so I will deal.
NON-PHOTO BLUE Pencils
For some reason it took me a bit longer to get the pencils. I have so many pencils of varying weights that I never use it is ridiculous. So I puttered around for a while with what I had until I seriously looked into getting some nifty blue pencils. I ended up going with the Prismacolor Turquoise (non photo blue) leads that you feed into a lead holder. You can also buy these in a standard pencil. I haven’t really looked outside of the Prismacolor name (I have used their pencils for years) but I am sure others make similar products. You can get a whole pack of 12 pencils for about $20.
I guess the biggest driving force behind buying and the reason I am now falling in love with this pencil is that I don’t have the mess to clean up from all my previous pencil work when I go to ink. I tend to be heavy handed when I draw/sketch and this becomes a problem later on when the darker, lead pencil smudges and I can never completely erase some of my lines. This issue is greatly reduced with the blue pencil and the benefits multiply when used in combination with a smooth Bristol board.

COPIC Sketch Markers
From what I saw at the Con and from what I can tell from my brief research on markers, COPIC Sketch markers are a big deal and there really isn’t another product like them out there. They have replaceable nibs, refillable ink and a huge assortment of colors but the best part is how these guys transfer ink to your paper. It’s like a brush but not. The tips are very flexible and provide much more control than a brush does. They blend well too. Some of the work I saw with just a few of these markers at the Con was incredible. Smooth transitions and shading, less notable stroke lines. As time goes on I will be able to talk them up more but for now I suggest you just look at some of the great artwork produced by these things.
So my goal is to increase my technical skill with these tools and hopefully have some decent art turned out by the time I go to my next SDCC where I will be looking for more ideas and tools to study as I mingle with the professionals.
Of course, as always, I am not opposed to something new and interesting now either…

Planking

Just got a new camera and Derek thought it would be fun to test it by planking.

I think this might be the start of something special.

Thank you Canon...

Design Many Robots

Here are my Designs for the Design Many Robots contest. They were due today (April 4, 2011)at Midnight.

This first bot is Crabby. Mostly he immitates the movements of crabs. I would guess tat it is a little bit territorial and thinks of itself as something bigger than it truely is.

The Second design is like a giant, firey trash compactor with legs. You know those movies where people and superheroes get sucked into planes? yeah... not so fun.
Let me know what you think!!!

Original Tron Helmet

I love the TRON movie from 1982. I always thought the Identity discs were cool but kinda cheesy looking. But the helmets a freaking awesome. Like most props of the past, the Tron costumes were put together from found items (example:the graflex flash used to make lightsabers). So when I found out that the Tron Helmets were made out of Cooper SK 2000/2001 Hockey Helmets I snatched one up.

This should be a fairly easy project; buy the helmet, clean it up, and paint it. The hardest part was forking up the shipping cost to get my helmet to the US. Good luck finding one in the US. All the ones I looked at on ebay were from Canada.

Here is my helmet. I bought it knowing that it was missing a side bumper. I intend to make two new bumpers.

I stripped it down and discovered that one of the two halves was in less than good condition. That shouldn't matter much on the finished product.

Roots

Well, its been a while since I posted anything but I got into a Pokemon craze with the help of some family members and decided to draw my favorite starter Pokemon from Pokemon Red, Bulbasaur.

Long gone are my days of Pokemon bliss. I could spend the better part of a few days trying to get the perfect Eevee, raise Pokemon champions in an hour at tournaments, and I am still convinced that in the summer of 1998 my friends and I were the first to exploit and understand the "box trick." That's right, my Mewtwo (long live Generation I!!!) is faster than yours and I didn't cheat.... technically.

I drew a small sketch and inked it but with no scanner available I opted to take a picture of it with our camera and edit it in Photoshop. It didn't take very long to draw. The inking is harder and I can never seem to get the smooth, flowing line I want, I'll have to work on that.

I love Bulbasaur partly because of his mild manner-ness. His Clark Kent qualities were apparent as he made short work of everyone early in the game while retaining his cute and quiet nature; a silent guardian type. It was always hard for me to watch him evolve at level 16... like he was losing his innocence.

There is no doubt that the Internet is full of cute big-eyed Bulbasaurs and I wanted to bring out more of his defensive and hostile (when aggravated) attitude. So I bring you this "Unleashed" version.
Picture yourself, an inexperienced, weak, over excited, little trainer, cowering behind him as you begin your journey in Kanto... damn Zubats!

On the Subject of Net Neutrality

I came upon a fun article at Gizmodo:
http://gizmodo.com/5605310/google-just-killed-net-neutrality

The basic gist is that providers like Verizon want to charge us for what we have access to on the internet. They want to limit access or offer faster access to specific content based on how much you are willing to pay.

This is kind of a scary thought. You know the driving force of the printing press was to get information (the bible) out to the people. To provide wide spread knowledge to those who could not afford it. Books became readily available and cheaper improving the quality of life of many people. Information sharing was also the driving force behind the creation of the internet. Researchers wanted to share their studies and libraries of info. All of that evolved into the information age we enjoy today.

We already pay for access to that resource! We all have internet “providers” and their prices are always going up as they offer us less. We pay for internet, cable and phone through Comcast. They offer a “triple play” which locks you into those specific services. You can’t have one without the other two or else you pay… a lot. At about $125 a month we just tried to lower our cost by dropping the cable and phone line. Standard DSL Internet alone would cost us $82.99 plus surcharges and fees. It is the same with most other internet providers.

Wireless Internet gouging
Since the article already mentions Google and Verizon’s team up and because the new trend is to promote constant, mobile, internet access (the only access Verizon provides), let me reference my personal experience with wireless internet. In 2007 I purchased a wireless adapter for my laptop. It cost me $120 and I paid $60 a month for unlimited access to the internet knowing that I would only get access in wireless hot spots or where my phone would get a signal. Today $60 a month will get you 5 GB of access. There is no advertised unlimited plan. According to Verizon 10 minutes of Youtube (streaming video) is 1.2 GB and 1 hour of online gaming is 5.4 GB. If you listen to music using Pandora you use 2.25 GB per hour. So where does that put someone who is on the 5GB plan? Lets see:
1.2 GB streaming video
5.4 GB gaming
2.25 GB Music
8.85 GB total
At $0.05/MB for overages that is a total bill of $257.12. $197.12 in overages!

Case in Point
We are going backwards instead of forward. Lost in greed, short sighted decisions are made restricting our access to the resources the internet provides. We are already paying a lot for our internets! But they will always try to squeeze more out of us.

Would it be crazy to foresee a future where digital information is so restricted that we actually revert, creating a rift in society where only those with the resources are allowed access to news, information and higher learning, exercise dominion over a less sophisticated blue collar-type workforce? Could we already be there?

Final Countdown!

I had a hard time sleeping last night. Time is ticking down. Tomorrow we have "reflection" time and a class party, Tuesday is the test and graduation and.... Wednesday I go HOME!!!

So I will be spending most of my time today studying and getting ready to go home. I roped out yesterday and am spending this morning in the Student Ministry Center... talkin to you!

I realized while packing, that I don't have as much junk as I thought. It will all fit into a duffle bag and my suit bag. Thats not so bad. I was all worried I would have to spend all this money to shift stuff home.

Well I'm off!

Don't call me I'll call you....

....when I'm ready
.....after I'm rested.
